S.E.L.F. Legal Aid

STEP 1

Income Eligibility

S.E.L.F. Legal Aid is available to families whose household income is at or below 125% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Please review the income chart below to determine whether you may be eligible for the program. If your household income exceeds the applicable limit for your family size, you are not eligible to apply for S.E.L.F. Legal Aid.* Applicants are required to provide documentation verifying household income as part of the application process.

*In certain circumstances, allowable deductions may be considered in accordance with applicable legal services eligibility standards. Please contact S.E.L.F. if you have questions regarding your eligibility.

STEP 2

Residency & IEP

In addition to meeting the income guidelines, applicants must be Connecticut residents and have a child with a current Individualized Education Program (IEP). S.E.L.F. Legal Aid is available only to eligible Connecticut families. Proof of Connecticut residency and a copy of the child’s current IEP must be submitted with the application.

STEP 3

Prescreen

If you meet the income, residency, and special education eligibility requirements, you may be eligible to apply for S.E.L.F. Legal Aid. Click the button below to complete a brief prescreen to determine your eligibility. Please submit a prescreen only if you meet all three eligibility requirements for the S.E.L.F. Legal Aid Program.

STEP 4

Application

If you are eligible to apply, you will receive a link to the application immediately upon completing the prescreen. To be considered, you must complete the application and upload all required documentation, including proof of income, Student’s current IEP, and a recent educational evaluation. Applications submitted without the required documentation will not be reviewed. Any applications submitted without documentation or prior approval from S.E.L.F. administration will be deleted.

STEP 5

Interview

If your completed application and supporting documentation are accepted for review, you will be required to participate in an interview. S.E.L.F. will contact you to schedule the interview and gather any additional information necessary to evaluate your application.  Completion of the application process does not guarantee acceptance into the S.E.L.F. Legal Aid Program.

Applications will not be considered without a completed interview.

STEP 6

Notification

S.E.L.F. Legal Aid accepts applications on a rolling basis subject to availability.

The Legal Aid Program may close to new applications at any point during the year when the program is at capacity; prospective applicants are encouraged to check the website periodically for updates.

STEP 8

Approval! What now?

Once you’ve been approved, you must complete a mandatory on-boarding call with S.E.L.F. If you have an attorney already, you will receive documents to sign for you and your attorney upon notification. Check your approval email for links to those documents.  If you do not yet have an attorney, you have 30 days from the notice of your grant approval to select an attorney. Please interview more than one attorney if possible and indicate that you are a S.E.L.F. grant recipient.  While initial consultations are not funded under the Attorney Grant Program, some attorneys may waive initial consultation fees for S.E.L.F. grant recipients.
